“Why am I evil spoken
of for that which I give thanks?”, asked
Paul the apostle of the church members in Corinth, and in
chapter ten and verse thirty-one of First Corinthians, Paul told the
Corinthian church members “do all to the
glory of God” where
we read:
Whether
therefore you eat, or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the
glory of God.
The verse begins,
“Whether
therefore you eat, or drink, ...”.
Paul began
with the word, “whether”
which means “if” “therefore” or
“then, accordingly, consequently and these things being so” “you
eat” which
means “the church members consume or devour”, “or
drink”
which means “of imbibe”. Paul referred to those within the church
of Corinth who “ate” or “drank” of the foods and drinks
“offered in sacrifice to idols”.
The
verse continues, “...
or whatsoever you do, do all to the
glory of God.” Paul
added the word, “or whatsoever”
which means
“of any certain thing” “you do”
or “the church members made, produced, constructed, formed,
fashioned, made ready or prepared”, “do
all” which
refers to “make, produce, construct, form, fashion, make ready and
prepare each, every, the whole, everyone and everything”“to
the glory”
or “toward the opinion, judgment, view, estimate, splendor and
brightness” “of God”
which refers to God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Any and everything the church members participated within or did was
to be done in a manner that gave “splendor and glory”
to God Almighty.
When
we meditate upon these words from Paul, we see how everything in
which the church members involved themselves was to be done so that
God received “glory” in it. If they ate or did not eat of
the “meats offered in sacrifice to idols”, they were to do
so “to the glory of God”. If they drank or did not drink
the “drinks offered in sacrifice to idols”, they were to
do so “to the glory of God”, and if there was anything
else in which they involved themselves, they were do to so “to
the glory of God”. Jesus Christ, God's Son lived His life on
earth in a manner in which He “gave glory to God”, and
since He did, how much more should we who call Him “Savior and
Lord” do the same? May the Lord help us to be mindful to “give
glory to God” in everything we do.
Next
time Paul tells the Corinthians, “Give
none offense, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the
church of God”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
