One Bread One Body 1 Corinthians 10:17

Paul the apostle asked the church members in Corinth how “the cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ?” He further inquired, “the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?” In chapter ten and verse seventeen of First Corinthians, Paul told the Corinthian church members “we being many are one bread, and one body” where we read:

For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

The verse begins, For we being many are one bread, and one body:”. Paul began with the word, “For” which means “even as, indeed, no doubt, verily and therefore” “we being many” which refers to “the large group of believers in Jesus Christ” “are one bread” or “as one single loaf”, “and one body” which means “as one single corpse”. Paul employed the symbols of “bread” and “the body” to show the “unity” that was among the church and Jesus Christ.

The verse continues, for we are all partakers of that one bread.” Paul added the word, “for” which means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and therefore” “we are all” or “Paul and the church members in total were” “partakers” which means “those who belong to, use or take part” “of that one bread” which refers to “out of, from and away from that one single loaf”. Paul shared how he and the church members “all took part” in the single “loaf” of the body of Christ.

When we think through these words from Paul, we understand the desire for church members to know their “unity” as the “one bread” of Jesus Christ. By our “partaking” or eating of the same loaf, which becomes assimilated into the substance of all our bodies, we become as one, and symbolizes Jesus Christ's church is one single unit. One of the greatest aspects of the “church” of Jesus is it's “oneness”, and as we participate in “communion” with one another, we demonstrate the “unity” Jesus meant for us to demonstrate to the world.

Next time Paul asks the Corinthians, “are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
