After
telling the church members in Corinth that “there
was no temptation taken”
them “but such as is common to man”,
he reminded them that “God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are
able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that”
they “might be able to bear it”.
He also exhorted them to “flee from
idolatry”,
and in chapter ten and verse fifteen of
First Corinthians, Paul told the “wise men”
among the Corinthian church members to “judge
what I say” where
we read:
The
verse begins, “I speak as to wise
men;”.
Paul began
with the words, “I speak”
which means “Paul utters, proclaims and declares” “as
to wisemen”
or “toward
intelligent, prudent and mindful ones”. Paul addressed the
“intelligent” people who were among the church members.
The
verse goes on to say, “judge
what I say.” Paul
added the word, “judge” which
means “approve, esteem, prefer, resolve, decree and decide mentally
and judicially” “what I say”
or “that which Paul makes known, declares and affirms”. Paul told
the “intelligent” church members to “approve and decide”
about what he has told them.
When
we consider these words from Paul, we understand how important it was
for him to know the church members were “wise” in their
“judgments” concerning the things he said to them. Perhaps he
insinuated and presupposed they were all “intelligent” and should
evaluate the things he wrote, but nonetheless he desired for them to
examine his words closely. Jesus Christ desires the same. Jesus came
to “to seek and to save that which was lost”, and those
who do not know Him as their personal Savior and Lord should “judge”
what He said, such as, “for God did not send his son into the
world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be
saved” (John 3:17). Those who will “believe” on Him,
“shall not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16),
however, those who do not “believe” on Him “are condemned
already”. (John 3:18)
Next
time Paul refers to, “the
cup of blessing which we bless”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
