Paul
the apostle told the church members in Corinth “Be
followers of me, even as I also am
of Christ.”,
and in chapter eleven and verse two of
First Corinthians, Paul told the Corinthian church members “remember
me in all things” where
we read:
Now I
praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things,
and
keep the ordinances, as I delivered them
to you.
The verse begins, “Now
I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things,...”.
Paul began
with the word, “Now”
which means “moreover and” “I
praise you” or
“Paul applauded, commended and lauded the church members”
“brethren”,
which means “fellow believers who are united to another by the bond
of affection ”, “that you remember
me” or
“because the church members were reminded, recalled to mind and
were mindful of Paul” “in all
things”
which refers to “in each, every, the whole and everyone of the
happenings, events and circumstances”. Paul commended the
Corinthian church members for “remembering”
him in everything.
The
verse continues, “...and
keep the ordinances, as I delivered them
to you.” Paul
added the words, “and keep” which
means “hold back, detain, retain and take possession of” “the
ordinances”
or “that which was delivered and the substance of teachings”,
“as I”
which refers to “Paul himself” “delivered
them” or
“gave over, committed and commended verbally” “to
you” which
refers to the church members. Not only did the church members
“remember” Paul, but they also “retained” the “teachings”
he “committed” unto them.
When
we think through these words from Paul, we see how it was not only
important that the church members “remember” him, but also
to “retain” the teachings he gave them. If they did not “follow”
after Paul, they would have forgotten him and the “teachings” he
gave. Jesus Christ provided ministers to the church to present His
truth, and those who are in the church should not only “remember”
the teacher, but also the “teachings” themselves. As we follow
Jesus, let us seek to learn from those He has chosen to “teach”
His word, and always value the “instruction” of God's word
through them.
Next
time Paul tells the Corinthians who is, “the
head of the man, the woman and Christ”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
