As
John the apostle continued to share about the “tribulation” that
was to come upon the earth, he shared concerning the first six seals
Jesus removed from the “scroll” in God's right hand. He began to
write about what happened when Jesus,
“had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the
space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels which stood before
God; and to them were given seven trumpets … And the seven angels
which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. The first,
second, third and fourth angels” blew
their trumpets, and great judgment fell upon the earth. John
continued,
“And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of
heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabitants
of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the
three angels, which are yet to sound! And the fifth angel sounded,
and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was
given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless
pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great
furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke
of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth:
and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have
power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass
of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only
those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to
them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they
should be tormented five months: and their torment was
as the torment of a scorpion, when he strikes a man. And in those
days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to
die, and death shall flee from them. And the shapes of the locusts
were
like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were
as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were
as the faces of men.” In
chapter nine and verse eight John saw how the “locusts”
“had
the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions”
where
we read:
The
verse reads, “And
they had hair as the hair of women, ...”
John
began with the words, “and
they had hair”
which means “and the locusts
had hair
on the heads” “as
the hair” or
“like the hair
on
the head” “of
women” which
refers to “pertaining to females”. John saw how these “locusts”
were
adorned with “long flowing
hair”
such as women wear.
The
verse goes on to say, “...
and their teeth were as the
teeth
of lions.”
John
added the words, “and
their teeth”
which means “the locusts'
teeth”
“were
as the teeth”
or “were like the teeth”
“of
lions”
which refers to “pertaining to the brave and mighty lion”.
John saw how the “teeth”
of the “locusts”
were similar to the “teeth
found in lions”.
When
we think through John's words in this verse, we imagine a more
specific picture of these “locusts”. They were like,
“horses prepared unto battle;
and on their heads were
as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were
as the faces of men”,
and they had woman like “hair”
as well as “lion-like” “teeth”.
These were fearsome characteristics, and not doubt John was moved by
their appearance. God will use these “locusts”
for His purposes of
judgment, and He desires through His Son Jesus that no one should
endure their “torture” and “destruction”. By having a
relationship with Jesus, a person shall be “saved” not only
eternally, but from the “torment” of these
“locusts” with “hair
of women and teeth of lions”.
Next
time John
shares how the “locusts”,
“had
breastplates of iron”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
