As
John the apostle continued to share about the “tribulation” that
was to come upon the earth, he told about the first six seals Jesus
removed from the “scroll” in God's right hand. He began to write
about what happened when Jesus,
“had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the
space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels which stood before
God; and to them were given seven trumpets … And the seven angels
which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. The first,
second, third and fourth angels” blew
their trumpets, and great judgment fell upon the earth. John
continued,
“And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of
heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabitants
of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the
three angels, which are yet to sound!” The
“fifth
angel sounded”
and fearsome “locusts”
were
released from the
“bottomless pit”
to cause havoc upon the earth, and
at
that time, “One
woe is past; and,
behold, there come two woes more hereafter.” John
added, “And
the sixth angel sounded,
and
I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is
before God”,
and in chapter nine and verse fourteen John shared how the sixth
angel was to “loose
the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates” where
we read:
Saying
to the sixth angel which had the trumpet,
Loose
the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.
The
verse reads, “Saying
to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, ...”
John
began with the word, “saying”
which means “uttering, proclaiming and declaring” “to
the sixth angel”
or “toward the sixth messenger, envoy and one sent” “which
had the trumpet” which
refers to “who owned, possessed and held the reverberating and
quavering instrument”. John heard the “voice”
before God's “golden altar”
give instruction to the “angel”
who blew the “sixth
trumpet”.
The
verse continues, “... Loose
the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.”
John
added the word, “loose”
which means “unfasten, unbind and release from bonds” “the
four angels”
or “the four messengers, envoys and ones sent” “which
are bound”
which means “that are fastened with chains, knit and tied” “in
the great river”
or “within the massive, spacious and abundant torrent, stream and
flood of running water” “Euphrates”
which means “the good and abounding river” and is “a large
famous river which rises in the mountains of Armenia Major and flows
through Assyria, Syria, Mesopotamia and the city of Babylon and
empties into the Gulf of Persia”. The message to this “sixth
angel” was
to “release” “four
angels”
which were “imprisoned” within the “massive” “Euphrates
river”.
When
we think through John's words in this verse, we note the significance
of these “four angels” which were “bound” within the
ancient “Euphrates river” of Babylon until this time when
the “sixth angel” sets them free. These “four angels”
shall govern over armies of troops throughout the world that cause
death and destruction on a level the earth has never seen before, and
although these “angels” are destined to be released, those
who receive Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”
shall never experience their terror. God desires to have a personal
relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and He sent
Jesus to die for the sins of the whole world to prove it. Jesus rose
from the grave three days after His death, and everyone who “believes
and trusts” in Him not only shall receive “everlasting life”
but also escape such horror as these “four angels” shall
inflict. May all who read these words hear the word of the Lord and
yield their lives to Jesus who alone can save from all these things.
Next
time John
shares the timing of when, “the
four angels were loosed”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
