Jesus Teaching Again - Mark 4:1

Mark wrote about Jesus, “There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, your mother and your brethren without seek for you. And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren. For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother”, and in chapter four and verse one of his book, Mark shares how Jesus,“began again to teach by the sea side” where we read:

And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.

The verse reads, “And he began again to teach by the sea side: Mark began with the words, “and he began again” or “and Jesus started, commenced and initiated another time” “to teach” which means “to give instruction, hold didactic discourses and instill doctrine into people” “by the sea side” which means “on the shore of the sea”. Mark shared how Jesus continued “teaching” people on the shore of the sea of Galilee.

The verse continues, “and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea;” Mark added the words “and there was gathered” which means “and was drawn together, collected and assembled” “unto him” or “to Jesus” “a great multitude” which means “a large, massive and huge crowd of people”, “so that he entered” or “insomuch, then and therefore Jesus went, stepped and made entrance” “into a ship” which means “into a sailing vessel or boat”, “and sat in the sea” or “and was seated within the boat on the sea”. Mark shared how there was such a large crowd of people surrounding Jesus that He “stepped into” a boat, went out a little distance from the shore and sat down in the boat.

Finally the verse says, “and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.” Mark finished the verse with the words, “and the whole multitude” or “and the entire crowd of people” “was by the sea” which means “were beside the sea” “on the land” or “on the shore of the sea”. Mark concluded the verse by sharing how the crowd of people continued to assemble upon the seashore as Jesus went out a little distance from them in a boat upon the water.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we can only imagine how many people were gathered together so that Jesus had to enter into a boat to be able to teach them. Those who heard Jesus desired to hear more from Him, and because He is the Messiah and Christ sent from God, He was worthy to be heard. No one ever taught like Jesus, and people were naturally attracted to Him. Those who are wise will desire to hear Him today through His word, the Bible, and when they hear Him, they can do no better than to submit themselves to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “taught them many things by parables”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
