Satan Taking Away the Word - Mark 4:15

Mark wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables. That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. And he said unto them, Know you not this parable? and how then will you know all parables?” Jesus continued, “The sower sows the word”, and in chapter four and verse fifteen of his book, Mark shares how Jesus told His disciples,“Satan comes immediately, and takes away the word that was sown” where we read:

And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard,

Satan comes immediately, and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.

The verse reads, “And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown;” Mark began with the words, “and these are they” or “and the people Jesus is referring to are the ones” “by the way side” which means “on the side of the traveled way or road”, “where the word” or “at the place the uttered, spoken, mandated and decree word of God“is sown” which means “is scattered and cast forth”. Mark shared how Jesus referred to people who have the word “scattered” among them, however, they are on the outskirts or side of the road way.

The verse continues, “but when they have heard, Satan comes immediately, and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.” Mark added the words, “but when” or “however at the time and moment” “they have heard” which means “those who are by the way side have understood, perceived and comprehended”, “Satan” or “the prince of evil spirits and the inveterate adversary of God and Christ” “comes immediately” which means “arises and appears straightway and forthwith”, “and takes away” or “and removes and carries away” “the word that was sown” which refers to “the uttered, spoken, mandated and decree word of God that was scattered and cast forth” “in their hearts” or “into the souls so far as it is affected and stirred in a bad way or good, or of the soul as the seat of the sensibilities, affections, emotions, desires, appetites and passions of the people by the way side”. Mark shared how Jesus said “Satan” steals the “word of God” from the souls of people who are by “the way side”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referred to people who have the “word of God” presented to them, but they are like the “way side” where the “seed” or “word” does not have a chance to take root at all. As soon as they “hear” God's “word”, “Satan” robs them of it. Many times the “word of God” goes forth and people hearing it “immediately” have “Satan” present them with doubt, unbelief and incertitude”. When “Satan” is able to “steal” the word of God from a person, there is no opportunity for them to know Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and those reading these words should be careful never to “allow” “Satan” to rob them of God's word.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus tells about God's word, “sown on stony ground”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
