Jesus Rebuking the Wind - Mark 4:39

Mark wrote, “the same day, when the even was come, he said unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, care you not that we perish?”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-nine of his book, Mark shares how Jesus, “arose, and rebuked the wind” where we read:

And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still.

And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

The verse reads, “And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still.” Mark began with the words, “and he arose” or “and Jesus aroused, lifted Himself and got up”, “and rebuked the wind” which means “and adjudged, chided, reproved and censured severely the violent agitation and stream of air or the very strong tempestuous wind”, “and said unto the sea” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the waves and waters in the sea”, “peace” which means “be silent, calm, quiet and mute”, “be still” or “be muzzled, speechless and reduced to silence”. Mark shared how Jesus stood up and “strongly charged” the “winds and waves” to “be quiet and muzzled”.

The verse continues, And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” Mark added the words, “and the wind ceased” which means “and the violent agitation and stream of air or the very strong tempestuous wind stopped it's raging and violence”, “and there was a great calm” or “and there was a large, massive and spacious stillness of the sea”. Mark shared how the “winds and waves” immediately stopped their raging and violent actions and there was “stillness” everywhere.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see Jesus' power demonstrated over the elements of the waters and sky. God created the earth, and Jesus was with Him when He did. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (See John 1:3) His ability to master over tempestuous winds and raging seas shows only a small portion of the power the Messiah Jesus has, and when a person submits their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they gain access to all the power they will ever need to “calm” every storm that comes into their lives.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus asked His disciples, “why are you so fearful?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
