Untameable - Mark 5:4

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes, And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains”, and in chapter five and verse four of his book, Mark shares, “neither could any man tame him” where we read:

Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

The verse reads, “Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, ...” Mark began with the word, “because that” or “since and on account that” “he had been often bound” or “the man who was possessed with the unclean spirit was many times and frequently fastened, tied and thrown into chains” “with fetters” which means “with shackles for the feet” “and chains” or “manacles, bonds and chains that bind”, “and the chains” or “and the manacles, bonds and chains that bind” “had been plucked asunder by him” which means “had been broken, torn in pieces and drawn apart by the man”. Mark shared how the man many times previously was “shackled” with “chains” but each time the man would “break” the “bindings and chains”.

The verse continues, “... and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.” Mark added the words, “and the fetters” which means “and the shackles for the feet” “broken in pieces” which means “torn apart, crushed, trampled and tread down”: “neither could any man” or “nor and in no way was any person capable or able to” “tame him” which means “restrain, curb and control the man”. Mark shared how the man also “tore apart” shackles for his feet and no one was able to “control” him.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how “wild” and “strong” this man was. Though people attempted to “bind” him with “chains and shackles”, the man would tear them apart. The man was uncontrollable, and we can imagine how fierce he looked to Jesus' disciples as they saw him coming. Jesus was intimidated by no one, and when you have the power of “Creator God” within your control, no one is able to overcome. God loves people, and regardless of how difficult or untamable their lives may have been or seem, Jesus is able to “overcome” their troubles and bring them “salvation” from their sins.

Next time Mark shares how the man was every day, “in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
