The Ruler Jairus - Mark 5:22

Mark wrote how, “he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but said unto him, Go home to your friends, and tell them how great things the Lord has done for you, and has had compassion on you. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel. And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was near unto the sea”, and in chapter five and verse twenty-two of his book, Mark shares how, “there came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name” where we read:

And, behold, there came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name;

and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,

The verse reads, “And, behold, there came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; Mark began with the words, “and, behold” or “and look, lo and consider”, “there came one of the rulers of the synagogue” which means “there appeared and came forth a certain one of the directors of the sacred worship center whose duty was to select the readers or teachers in the synagogue, to examine the discourses of the public speakers, and to see that all things were done with decency and in accordance with ancestral usage”, “Jairus” or “whom God enlightens”, “by name” which means “by the word used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering”. Mark shared how this “director or ruler” of the “synagogue” named “Jairus” came to where Jesus was.

The verse goes on to say, and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,” Mark continued with the words, “and when he saw him” which means “and at the time and moment Jairus perceived, observed, discerned and discovered Jesus” ,“he fell at his feet” or “Jairus bent down, descended and fell prostrate at the feet of Jesus”. Mark shared how “Jairus” “fell to the feet of Jesus” immediately after perceiving who He was.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we can imagine this “director” of the “synagogue” who was an overseer of all the activities within it as he “bowed” before Jesus' feet in humility. More than likely this was a shock to the people around him, but “Jairus” was driven to this submissive position. We shall learn why he did this in the next few verses, but for now let it suffice to know that those who truly recognize who Jesus is will not only “bow” before His feet, but give Him the honor and worship that He is truly due as “Savior and Lord” of the world.

Next time Mark shares how Jairus told Jesus, “My little daughter lies at the point of death” again, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
