Why are You So Fearful? - Mark 4:40

Mark wrote, “the same day, when the even was come, he said unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, care you not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm”, and in chapter four and verse forty of his book, Mark shares how Jesus asked His disciples, “why are you so fearful?” where we read:

And he said unto them, Why are you so fearful? how is it that you have no faith?

The verse reads, “And he said unto them, Why are you so fearful?” Mark began with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked His disciples”, “why are you so fearful” which means “for what reason and cause were the disciples so afraid, timid and faithless”? Mark shared how Jesus questioned His disciples for the reason they were so timid and faithless.

The verse goes on to say, how is it that you have no faith?” Mark continued with the words, “how is it that you” which means “in what way is it that Jesus' disciples” “have no faith” or “do not own, possess or hold any belief, trust and confidence”? Mark shared how Jesus asked why His disciples possessed no “confidence or trust” within?

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus desired to know why His disciples did not have any “trust” within them. They obviously didn't know who was really with them, and when Jesus is not put in His proper position, mistrust, fear and unbelief are often the results. God desires to have a relationship with people that is based upon who He is, and even when storms blow and waves are raging all around, Jesus is still in control and there is no need to be “fearful” and “unbelieving”.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus asked His disciples, “”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
