He that Has Ears - Hear - Mark 4:9

Mark wrote how Jesus began to teach the people surrounding Him, “many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine, Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow. And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred”, and in chapter four and verse nine of his book, Mark shares how Jesus said,“He that has ears, let him hear” where we read:

And he said unto them, He that has ears to hear, let him hear.

The verse reads, “And he said unto them, ... Mark began with the words, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which means “to the people who surrounded Him” . Mark shared how Jesus made the following declaration toward the people who were on the seashore listening to Him.

The verse continues, “... He that has ears to hear, let him hear.” Mark added the words “he that has ears to hear” which means “the person whether male or female who has ears with which they are given the faculty of hearing, understanding and perceiving”, “let him hear” or “allow and permit that person to understand, perceive and hearken to what Jesus said”. Mark shared how Jesus gave a conditional declaration to the people because He wanted the ones who were given the capacity to “hear” Him to understand what He had to say.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see Jesus' desire for people to understand His words even though He knew many would not. God desires people to “hear” His “good news” of “salvation” through His Son Jesus, and some will listen, and others will not. Those who are wise enough to “hear” what the Lord has to say will be given the capacity to “hear” Him. Those who do not will be eternally separated from God and never know what it means to “bear fruit” in His Kingdom.

Next time Mark shares, “when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
