Jesus' Mother and Brethren - Mark 3:34

Mark wrote how, “there came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, your mother and your brethren without seek for you. And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?”, and in chapter three and verse thirty-four of his book, Mark shares how Jesus answered His own question by saying,“Behold my mother and my brethren” where we read:

And he looked round about on them which sat about him,

and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

The verse reads, “And he looked round about on them which sat about him, ... Mark began with the words, “and he looked round about on them” or “and Jesus looked in a circle around Himself on all sides at the people who were with Him” “which sat about him” which means “who were seated in a circle about Him”. Mark shared how Jesus looked at all the people seated about Him.

The verse goes on to say, “... and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!” Mark continued with the words “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Behold” or “lo, look and see” “my mother” which means “Jesus' mother “and my brethren” or “and Jesus' brothers”. Mark shared how Jesus declared those who were surrounding Him as His “mother and brothers”.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we note how Jesus took the time to observe all the people were were seated about Him, and then He declared to those who told Him of His mother and brother seeking Him, “these are my mother and brothers”. In other words, the people around Jesus were considered by Him to be His “family”. When a person receives Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they become a part of the “family” of God. The people surrounding Jesus desired to hear Him, listen to Him and follow Him, and the same opportunity is available to all who “will” today. May all who read these words become a part of the “family of God” by yielding their lives to His Son Jesus.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus said what happens with, “whosoever shall do the will of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
