How to Know All Parables - Mark 4:13

Mark wrote when Jesus, “was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables. That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them”, and in chapter four and verse thirteen of his book, Mark shares how Jesus asked His disciples, and how then will you know all parables? where we read:

And he said unto them, Know you not this parable? and how then will you know all parables?

The verse reads, “And he said unto them, Know you not this parable?” Mark began with the words, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which means “to the twelve disciples”, “know you not” or “do you not understand, perceive and comprehend” “this parable” which refers to “this earthly story that has a heavenly meaning”? Mark shared how Jesus questioned the disciples as to whether they understood the “parable” of the “sower and the seed”.

The verse continues, “and how then will you know all parables?” Mark continued with the words “and how then” which means “and in what way and manner therefore, wherefore and these things being so” “will you know” or “are the disciples to understand, perceive and comprehend” “all parables” which refers to “each, every, the whole and everyone of the earthly stories with heavenly meanings”. Mark shared how Jesus rhetorically asked His twelve disciples in what way would they “understand” all the “parables” which He taught.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see that Jesus desires for His disciples to “know” what His “parables” mean. These “earthly stories with heavenly meanings” given by Jesus are to be understood, and those who align themselves with Jesus through “faith and trust” in Him shall learn them. Jesus gave a clue to “understanding all parables” through His next words, and when we apply “Biblical constancy” (which is how the first usage of a symbol, reference or word carries through the whole canon of God's Word), we shall pay particular attention to what Jesus has to say in the next few verses. God desires for everyone to know these things through a relationship with His Son Jesus, and those who are wise will yield to Him and be among those who are given the ability to understand.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus said, “the sower sows the word”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
