Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes, And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains. Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshiped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the most high God? I adjure you by God, that you torment me not”, and in chapter five and verse eight of his book, Mark shares how Jesus said, “come out of the man” where we read:
For he said unto him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.
The verse reads, “For he said unto him, Come out of the man, ...” Mark began with the words, “for he said” or “because, since and on account that Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” or “to the man with the unclean spirit”, “Come out” which means “get out, proceed forth and escape” “of the man” or “pertaining to the man with the unclean spirit”. Mark shared the reason the man shouted loudly his question concerning Jesus tormenting him was because Jesus told the “unclean spirit” to “come out” of the man.
The verse continues, “... you unclean spirit.” Mark added the words, “you unclean” which means “you not cleansed, foul and morally lewd” “spirit” or “simple essence which devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting ”. Mark shared how Jesus directed His command to the “wicked and foul” spirit” that possessed the man.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus recognized why this man acted so “wild and wickedly”. He was possessed by “unclean spirits”, and those “evil beings” controlled this man words, actions, strength and way of living. Jesus told the “unclean spirits” to “get out” of him, to which they responded with reverence, awe and fear begging Jesus not to “torture and torment” him. It's amazing how this “unclean spirit” had no trouble “tormenting” this man, but when the potential for him to be “tormented” arose, he wanted “mercy”. God will deal with the “unclean spirits” in the spiritual world, and His Son Jesus is able to “cast out” any of them who have control of a person's life today. The best response is for a person who is influenced by evil to call out to Jesus who is able to save them from every wickedness and sin.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus asks, “what is your name?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
