Mark wrote how, “there came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet. And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lies at the point of death: I pray you, come and lay your hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him. And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years”, and in chapter five and verse twenty-six our of his book, Mark writes how the woman, “suffered many things of many physicians” where we read:
And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had,
and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
The verse reads, “And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, ...” Mark began with the words, “and had suffered” or “and had experienced and underwent sensations or impressions which were usually painful and vexing” “many things” which means “a lot of treatments and remedies” “of many physicians” or “from a lot of medical doctors”, “and had spent all that she had” which means “and had incurred expense, squandered and consumed each, every, the whole and everything that the woman with the issue of blood owned, possessed and held”. Mark shared how the “woman with the issue of blood” endured many “treatments” from medical “physicians” and had “spent” all of her belongings for their services.
The verse continues, “... and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,” Mark added the words, “and was nothing bettered” which means “was not assisted, made useful, advantageous or profitable”, “but rather grew worse” or “but to a more willingly, readily and sooner appeared and found herself in a more evil or aggravated state”. Mark shared how “nothing” the woman endured helped her get better and even made her feel “worse” than before.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we have compassion upon this poor woman who tried everything to be “healed”. She went to the doctors, and they didn't help her. She “spent” everything she owned, and was none the “better”. She was desperate, and her desperation lead her to Jesus. Sometimes no matter what a person tries, it does not work, and as we shall see in this example, Jesus is the only one who can help. Those who are wise will recognize who Jesus is and simply “come” to Him and find that His desire is to be “helper, healer and Savior” of all who do.
Next time Mark shares how the woman, “had heard of Jesus”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
