Mark wrote, “the same day, when the even was come, he said unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-seven of his book, Mark shares how Jesus told His disciples, “there arose a great storm of wind” where we read:
And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
The verse reads, “And there arose a great storm of wind, ...” Mark began with the words, “and there arose” or “and there came into existence, happened and came to pass” “a great storm of wind” which means “a large, massive and huge whirlwind, squall or violent attack of a tempestuous wind”. Mark shared how a “massive” “tempestuous wind” came upon Jesus and the disciples.
The verse goes on to say, “... and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.” Mark continued with the words, “and the waves” which means “and the water swells of the sea” “beat into the ship” or “rushed upon, in and against the boat or sailing vessel”, “so that it was now full” which means “so that the sailing vessel or boat was filled with water”. Mark shared how the “waves” were so “strong” that they “struck” the boat with intensity and “filled” it with water.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we can imagine how intense this “storm” was that came upon the boat in which Jesus and the disciples were. “Tempestuous winds” and “pounding waves” were thrashing against the “little vessel”, and it became “filled” with water. No doubt the disciples were frightened, and as we continue to study this part of Jesus' ministry, let us be mindful that God is watching all these things, and because His plan is the “salvation” of mankind through His Son Jesus, though the outward circumstances look horrific, God has a plan, and He will work it out.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus was, “in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
