Running and Worshiping - Mark 5:6

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes, And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains. Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones”, and in chapter five and verse six of his book, Mark shares how the man, “saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshiped him” where we read:

But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshiped him,

The verse reads, “But when he saw Jesus afar off, ...” Mark began with the words, “but when” or “moreover and at the time and moment”, “he saw Jesus” or “the observed, perceived, understood and discern it was Jesus who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “afar off” which means “from a distance”. Mark shared how the man possessed with an unclean spirit saw Jesus from a distance away.

The verse continues, “... he ran and worshiped him,” Mark added the words, “he ran” which means “the man rapidly propagated himself” “and worshiped him” which means “and fell prostrate to do homage to, knelt before and with his forehead bowed as an expression of profound reverence to Jesus”. Mark shared how the man “ran” to Jesus and “bowed” before Him in “reverence, homage and obeisance”.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see the response of this man to Jesus when he “saw” him. Though there was no previously known meeting between Jesus and this man, the man knew who Jesus was. The “man” “ran” to Him and bowed himself in “homage, reverence and worship” to Jesus. The “unclean spirits” within this man knew who Jesus was, and they “bowed” before Him in fear. Jesus is more powerful than any “evil spirit”, and regardless of the effect the “evil ones” have upon people, Jesus is able not only to “subdue” them, but also to deliver anyone who has been affected by their pernicious and wicked ways.

Next time Mark shares how the man asked, “what have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the most high God?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
