Mark wrote how Jesus asked, “Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-one of his book, Mark shares how Jesus said the Kingdom of God, “is like a grain of mustard seed” where we read:
It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth,
is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:
The verse reads, “It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, ...” Mark began with the words, “it is like” or “the kingdom of God is similar to and in the likeness of” “a grain of mustard seed” which means “a kernel of a mustard plant”, “which” or “that”, “when it is sown” or “at the time and moment the mustard seed is scattered and cast forth” “in the earth” or “into the ground, arable land and dirt”. Mark shared how Jesus began to employ the example of a “mustard seed” being “sown” as an example of God's Kingdom.
The verse goes on to say, “... is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:” Mark continued with the words, “is less than all” or “is smaller than each, every, the whole and everyone of” “the seeds” or “the grains or kernels which contain within themselves the germ of future plants” “that be in the earth” which means “that exist within the arable land, ground and territory”. Mark shared how Jesus referred to how “small” the “mustard seed” was compared to all the other “seeds” available on the earth.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus began to use the “mustard seed” as an example of the what the “Kingdom of God” is like. It is interesting that He chose the “smallest” of seeds to describe what it's like. God cares about people so much that He will use the “smallest” of “seeds” to demonstrate how He will be in a relationship with every person who will yield their life to Him through His Son Jesus. Jesus will say more about the “mustard seed” and the “Kingdom of God” in the next verse, but suffice it for now to know Jesus knows more about the Kingdom of God than anyone, and those who are wise should consider carefully what He has to say.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus tells how the “mustard seed”, “when it is sown, it grows up, and becomes greater than all herbs”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
