The apostle John wrote how in the middle of the feast, “Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. And the Jews marveled, saying, How knows this man letters, having never learned? Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. He that speaks of himself seeks his own glory: but he that seeks his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him”, and in chapter seven and verse nineteen of his book, John shared how Jesus asked, “did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law?” where we read:
Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why go you about to kill me?
The verse reads, “Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law?” John began with the words, “Did not Moses” or “was it not Moses whose name means drawing out and was the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion” “give you the law” which means “grant, bestow, furnish and supply to you, Jewish people, the rule producing a state approved of God”, “and yet none of you” or “and still not one person among you Jewish people” “keeps the law” which means “produces, constructs, makes ready nor prepares the rule producing a state approved of God”? John shared how Jesus referred to the “law” which “Moses” provided to declare how they did not “do” as the “law” commands.
The verse goes on to say, “Why go you about to kill me?” John continued with words, “why go you about” which means “for what reason and cause do you, Jewish people, seek, plot, desire and endeavor” “to kill me” or “to inflict mortal death upon, destroy, extinguish and abolish me, Jesus”? John shared how Jesus questioned the Jewish people as to the reason the sought to “destroy and abolish” Him.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus began to “challenge” the “Jewish people” who desired to “eliminate” Him. He referred to the “law of Moses” that was provided to them but never obeyed or “kept” by them. Though people may be “religious”, it does not mean they have a personal relationship with God. His desire is for every person to believe and trust in His Son Jesus so He can forgive their sins and provide them with everlasting life. Let all who consider Jesus' words think through His question and ask themselves whether they believe or are among those who desire to “eliminate” Jesus.
Next time John shares how the people tell Jesus, “you have a devil”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
