John the apostle wrote how, “a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)”, and in chapter eleven and verse three of his book John shared how Lazarus', “sisters sent unto” Jesus “saying, Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick” where we read:
Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.
The verse reads, “Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, …” John began with the words, “Therefore his sisters” which means “wherefore and on this account Lazarus' female siblings Mary and Martha” “sent unto him” or “put in to those who would call out to Jesus”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. John shared how “Lazarus' sisters”, Mary and Martha, “sent” word to Jesus concerning the following.
The verse continues, “... Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.” John added the word, “Lord” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and title given to God the Messiah”, “behold” or “lo, look and consider”, “he whom you love” which means “the male human being that you, Jesus, approve of, befriend, are fond of and feel affection toward” “is sick” or “exists as weak, feeble, without strength and powerless”. John shared how the “word sent” by “Lazarus' sisters Mary and Martha” was that “Lazarus”, of whom Jesus was very fond, was “weak, feeble and very ill”.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how “Lazarus' sisters” were very concerned for their “brother” who was ill. They knew Jesus could help their brother, so they sent word to Him that let Him know “Lazarus'” condition. We shall see how Jesus responds to their information in our next few verse, but for now let it suffice us to know these sisters did the best they could for their brother when they sent word to Jesus. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will understand that every person has a “serious spiritual illness” that only He can cure.
Next time John shares how Jesus said, “this sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
