The apostle John wrote, “Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long do you make us to doubt? If you be the Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus answered them, I told you, and you believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. But you believe not, because you are not of my sheep, as I said unto you”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-seven of his book John shared how Jesus said, “my sheep hear my voice, and I know them" where we read:
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
The verse reads, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, ...” John began with the words, “my sheep” which means “my, Jesus', four footed, tame animal accustomed to graze” “hear my voice” or “are endowed with the faculty for hearing, perceiving, understanding and discerning my, Jesus', sound and tone of uttered speech”, “and I know them” which means “and I, Jesus, perceive, have knowledge of, understand and are acquainted with those who join Him as disciples, are His sheep”. John shared how Jesus said His “sheep” or “disciples and followers” “hear” Him when He speaks, and He is well aware of who they are.
The verse continues, “... and they follow me:” John added the words, “and they” which means “and Jesus' sheep or disciples” “follow me” or “join, side with and accompany me, Jesus”. John shared how Jesus said His “sheep or disciples” “side with and accompany” Him.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how to know whether a person is “Jesus' disciple” or not. Do they “hear” His voice? Does He “know them”? Do they “follow and accompany” Him wherever He leads? Jesus desires to be the “Savior and Lord” of every person who believes and trusts in Him, and those who are wise will seek to “hear His voice”, be known of Him and “follow” Him wherever He leads.
Next time John shares how Jesus says, “and I give to them eternal life", so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
