Comforting the Cast Down 2 Corinthians 7:6

Paul the apostle told the church members in Corinth when he and his companions, “were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.” In chapter seven and verse six of Second Corinthians, Paul told the church members how God, “comforts those that are cast down where we read:

Nevertheless God, that comforts those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus.

The verse begins, “Nevertheless God, that comforts those that are cast down,...” Paul began with the word, “nevertheless” which means “notwithstanding, with exception and restriction” “God” which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “that comforts” which means “who calls to one's side, summons, admonishes, exhorts, entreats and beseeches” “those that are cast down” which means “people who are brought low with grief, humbled and made lowly in degree and spirit”. “God”, according to the apostle Paul, “entreats and beseeches” those who have been “humbled and brought low”.

The verse goes on to say, “...comforted us by the coming of Titus. Paul added the word, “comforted us” which means “called to one's side, admonished, exhorted, entreated and beseeched Paul and his companions” “by the coming” or “through the presence, arrival and advent” “of Titus” whose name means “nurse” and was “a Gentile Christian and Paul's companion in some of his journeys”. Paul and his companions were encouraged by the visit of “Titus” who was one of Paul's young proteges'.

When we meditate upon these words of Paul, we notice how “God” knew what he and his companions needed. When they were “cast down” or “humbled and made low”, God sent them “Titus” who encouraged them in the faith. Jesus Christ cares for His church body, and when people are “depressed, humbled or made lowly”, He often sends someone into their lives to encourage them. Perhaps those who read these words are in need of encouragement, exhortation or entreaty. Let us allow these words to “encourage” us today, and may the love of Jesus Christ permeate the condition of our hearts and minds.

Next time Paul tells the church members, “not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then,
