The Light Shined in Our Hearts 2 Corinthians 4:6

Paul the apostle shared with the church members concerning people who did not believe in Jesus as he declared, “For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake”, and in chapter four and verse six of Second Corinthians, Paul shared with the church members how God, “commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts”, where we read:

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

The verse begins, “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts,...” Paul began with the words, “for God” which means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and therefore the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “who commanded” or “God spoke, told and brought” “the light” which means “the truth and its knowledge together with the spiritual purity associated with it” “to shine” or “to radiate brilliancy” “out of darkness” which means “away from ignorance respecting divine things and human duties and the accompanying ungodliness and immorality together with their consequent misery in hell”, “has shined” which refers to “radiated brilliancy” “in our hearts” which means “within Paul and his companion's souls or minds as they are the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”. Paul shared how the God who created the “light” “commanded” that illumination flow forth to the “souls” of he and his companions.

The verse continues, “...to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Paul added the words, “to give the light” or “to enlighten, illuminate and make bright” “of the knowledge” which means “the general knowledge and intelligence” “of the glory” or “concerning the opinion, judgment, view, honor, splendor and brightness” “of God” which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “in the face” or “in the countenance and look” “of Jesus” whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation” and is “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “Christ” or “the anointed One, the Messiah and the Son of God”. The reason God “commanded” the “light to shine out of darkness” was so “hearts” of all who hear would be “enlightened” with the “honor, splendor and brightness” of God through His Son Jesus.

When we meditate upon these words of Paul, we see the reason for God to “command” light out of darkness. People needed salvation. They needed a purpose and a plan for their lives, and there is no better beginning than to begin a relationship with God. God desired to “give the light” of the knowledge of Him through His Son Jesus who was the “expressed image of His Father”. We may now know God because His Son Jesus provided access to Him, and when that truth is birthed in our “hearts”, we shall grow in our intimacy with the Heavenly Father.

Next time Paul tells the church members, “we have this treasure in earthen vessels”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then,
