Of the Flesh or Of the Spirit Romans 8:5

Paul the apostle told the people in Rome when God sent, “his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin” He “condemned sin in the flesh” so, “the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit”, and in chapter eight and verse five of Romans, Paul shared with the believers in Rome concerning people , “that are after the flesh”, and people “that are after the Spirit” where we read:

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh;
but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

The verse begins, For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh;” Paul began with the words, “for” which means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and therefore” “they that are after” or “people who live according to, down from, through out, toward and along” “the flesh” which means “the mere human and earthly nature of man apart from divine influence and therefore prone to sin and opposed to God” “do mind” or “agree together with, direct their thoughts toward, seek after and strive for” “the things” which means “attitudes, actions and verbiage” “of the flesh” or “the mere human nature and earthly nature of man apart from divine influence and therefore prone to sin and opposed to God”. Paul shared how people who are “living according to their sinful and fleshly nature”, give attention to, “seek after and strive for” “things” that pertain to their “sinful nature”.

The verse goes on to say, but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.” Paul added the word, “but” which means “moreover and” “they that are after the Spirit” which refers to “people who agree together with, direct their thoughts toward, seek after and strive for” “the Spirit” which means “the third person of the triune God who is the Holy Spirit, coequal and coeternal with the Father and the Son” “the things” which means “attitudes, actions and verbiage” “of the Spirit” which refers to “the third person of the triune God who is the Holy Spirit, coequal and coeternal with the Father and the Son”. People who give attention to, “seek after and strive for “things” that pertain to “God's Holy Spirit”, live according to the ways of “God's Holy Spirit”.

When we consider these words of Paul, we see the difference between those who “live after the flesh” and those who “live after the Spirit” of God. People who live “after the flesh”, live according to their “body needs and desires”, and people who live according to “God's Spirit” live according to what is pleasing to God. “God's Holy Spirit” testifies of the validity of Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death on the cross for the “sinful flesh” of every person, and when a person yields their life to Jesus, they no longer desire to “live according to the flesh” but “according to God's Spirit”. The “attitudes, actions and verbiage” of a person reveal whether they live “according to their fleshly desires” or according to “God's Spirit”, and others who observe that person will discover whose servant they are.

Next time Paul shares tells his readers concerning, for to be carnally minded is death, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
