Blessed are They Who Read, Hear and Keep These Words Revelation 1:3

John the apostle began the book of “Revelation” with the words,“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass” Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw”, and he told how Jesus “sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John”. In chapter one and verse three of Revelation, John shared,, “Blessed is he that reads, hears and keeps thing which are written therein” where we read:

Blessed is he that reads, and they that hear the words of this prophecy,
and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

The verse begins, “Blessed is he that reads, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, ...” John began with the word, “blessed” which means “oh how happy, supremely blessed, fortunate and well off” “is he that reads” or “is the person whether male or female who distinguishes between, recognizes, knows accurately and acknowledges”, “and they that hear” which means “and the people whether male or female who attend to, consider what is being said, understand and have a sense of what is said”, “the words” which refers to “the utterances, decrees, mandates and orders of the moral precepts given by God” “of this prophecy” or “pertaining to the discourse emanating from divine inspiration and declaring the purposes of God whether by reproving and admonishing the wicked or comforting the afflicted or revealing things hidden”. John shared how there is a built in “blessing” for people who “read” and “hear” the words written in this “Revelation”.

The verse continues, “... and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” John added the words, “and keep” or “attend to carefully, take care of and observe” “those things which are written” or “the aspects and contents that are delineated or formed in letters on a tablet, parchment, paper or other material” “therein” or “within the Revelation”: “for the time” which means “because and since the due measure of time, decisive epoch waited for and the opportune and seasonable period” “is at hand” or “near or in place and position”. John shared how those who “observe” the words in this “Revelation” shall also be “blessed” because the “time” is “near and in place” for these things to occur.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we see how there should be no excuse for the Christian to keep away from this book. There is a built in “blessing” for those who “read, hear and keep” the words written within, and God designed it to “bless” His people. God wants every person to be “saved”, and regardless of how “sinful” they have been, He is able to “bless” them with “salvation” if they will receive His Son Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”. Let all who read these words enjoy the “blessing” of God for “reading, hearing and keeping” the words in “Revelation”, and may we discover God's grace which is given through His Son Jesus.

Next time we shall see John the apostle address, “the seven churches which are in Asia”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
