In the Spirit on the Lord's Day Revelation 1:10

John the apostle shared in his introduction of the book of “Revelation”, “I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ”, and in chapter one and verse ten of Revelation, John shares how he, “was in the Spirit on the Lord's day” where we read:

I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,

The verse begins, “I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, ...” John began with the words, “I was in the Spirit” which means “John was worshiping in the spirit” “on the Lord's day” or “on the day which is related to and belongs to the Lord”, “and heard” which means “attended to, considered the sound and sense of what was said” “behind me” or “in back of and after John” “a great voice” or “an intense, of great degree, mighty, violent and strong sound or tone of uttered words, speech, language and tongue”. While John was “worshiping in the spirit”, he heard a loud and “mighty” voice.

The verse goes on to say, “... as of a trumpet” John added the words, “as of a trumpet” or “like a quivering or reverberating sound that a trumpet instrument makes”. The sound of the “voice” John heard was not only “loud and powerful”, but it sounded like a “reverberating” trumpet behind him.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we understand how he “heard” the resounding “voice” as he was worshiping in the “Spirit” on the “day of the Lord”. This was no ordinary “voice” because it was “loud, mighty and strong”, and it resembled a “reverberating trumpet”. The “trumpet” was used to sound an “alarm” to the people of John's day, and John's attention was immediately drawn to the noise of it. God Almighty “sounds an alarm” to mankind as He directs this “Revelation” to everyone and especially to those who will “receive” His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Let all who read these words put themselves in the position of John and hear in the “Spirit” the resounding “trumpet” of the Lord.

Next time John shares how the voice said, “I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
