Things Past, Present and Future Revelation 1:19

As John the apostle continued to share the “Revelation” which was given to him by Jesus Christ through an angel, he told how he, “was in the Spirit on the Lord's day”, and he saw “the Son of Man” or “Jesus” and many of His visible characteristics. After John saw Him, “Jesus” declared that He, “lives, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” In chapter one and verse nineteen of Revelation, John shared how Jesus told him to, “write the things you have seen, which are, and the things...hereafter” where we read:

Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are,
and the things which shall be hereafter;

The verse begins, “Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, ...” John began with the word, “write” which means “delineate or form letters on a tablet, parchment, paper or other material” “the things which you have seen” or “the things which John already saw”, “and the things which are” which means “the things which John is presently seeing”. John was commissioned to “write down” things he had already seen and things which were occurring presently.

The verse continues, “... and the things which shall be hereafter;” John added the words, “and the things which shall be hereafter” which means “and the things in the future”. John was commission to write things which will occur in the future.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we see how he was authorized by Jesus to record the “past, present and future” things he saw. The things he had seen, or the past, were the things recorded in chapter one of Revelation. The things “which are” are the things he will record in chapters two and three, and the “things which shall be hereafter” or in Greek “meta tauta” which are the things John saw in chapters four through twenty-two. It is important to keep this in mind as we proceed in our study. God desires for everyone to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and Jesus died for everyone's sins to make that possible. As John continues to his words, let us be assured, God knows the past, the present and the future, and there is no one better to follow than the one He commissioned to “write” and record all of them.

Next time John writes about, “the mystery of the seven stars...and the seven golden candlesticks”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
