As You Have Believed Matthew 8:13

Matthew the apostle shared, “when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him. And saying, Lord, my servant lies at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus said unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it. When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth”, and in chapter eight and verse thirteen of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told the centurion, “go your way; and as you have believed, so be it done unto you” where we read:

And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go your way; and as you have believed, so be it done unto you.

And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

The verse reads, And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go your way; and as you have believed, so be it done unto you. Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus” or “the One whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “said” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto the centurion” or “to the officer in the Roman army who was captain of one hundred men”, “go your way” which means “withdraw yourself and depart”; “and as you have believed” or “in the same manner and way the centurion trusted, thought to be true and was persuaded”, “so be it done” or “let it come into existence, begin to be and happen” “unto you” which refers to “the centurion”. Jesus told the “centurion” to “depart” and what he believed would “happen”.

The verse goes on to say, And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.” Matthew continued with the words, “and his servant” or “and the centurion's attendant, slave or minister” “was healed” which means “cured , made whole and restored to health”, “in the selfsame hour” or “within the very same and definite time when Jesus spoke those words”. The “servant” of the “centurion” was “restored to health” in the very “hour” that Jesus told him he would be.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see the mighty power of the Messiah Jesus demonstrated from a distance. God needs not to physically be in any particular place to work, and when Jesus saw the “great faith” of this “centurion”, all that was necessary was for Him to speak the word and the centurion's servant would be healed. God desires this kind of intimacy with every person through His Son Jesus Christ, and when a person yields their life to Him as “Savior and Lord”, no time or space shall limit His awesome power being displayed.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus went into Peter's house and, “he saw his wife's mother, laid, and sick of a fever, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
