Great Multitudes Followed Jesus Matthew 8:1

Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, Therefore whosoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that hears these sayings of mine, and does them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes”, and in chapter eight and verse one of his book, Matthew shared what happened when Jesus,“was come down from the mountain” where we read:

When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.

The verse reads, When he was come down from the mountain, ... Matthew began with the word, “when” or “at the time and moment” “he was come down from” which means “Jesus descended from” “the mountain” or “the lifting above the plain or hill”. Jesus “descended” from the “mountain” from which He taught the Sermon on the Mount.

The verse goes on to say, ... great multitudes followed him. Matthew added the words, “great multitudes” or “large, massive and numerous crowds of people” “followed him” which means “accompanied, joined and sided with Jesus”. As Jesus descended from the “mountain”, a huge group of people “accompanied” Him.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see the effect Jesus had upon the people who heard Him speak. Jesus spoke with “authority” concerning the “Kingdom of Heaven”, and those who heard Him desired to be with Him. God is speaking through His word today, and He desires that every person have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus. Those who are wise shall “hear, obey and follow” Jesus, and they shall receive the promise of “everlasting life” if they do.

Next time Matthew shares how, “a leper came to worshipJesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
