Jesus Took Our Infirmities and Sicknesses Matthew 8:17

Matthew shared, “when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.” He continued, “When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils:

and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick”, and in chapter eight and verse seventeen of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus' actions, “fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet” where we read:

That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet,

saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

The verse reads, That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, ... Matthew began with the words, “that it might be fulfilled” or “so the scripture would be made full, abound, be completed and liberally supplied” “which was spoken” which means “that was uttered, declared and proclaimed” “by Isaiah” or “through Isaiah the prophet whose name means Jehovah's help and was a famous Hebrew prophet who prophesied in the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah” “the prophet” which means “the one who was moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman and solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”. Matthew shared how Jesus doing these works “made full and completed” the prophesy spoken by Isaiah the prophet long ago.

The verse goes on to read, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” Matthew added the word, “saying” or “uttering, proclaiming and declaring”, “Himself” which means “His own self” “took our infirmities” or “laid hold of, claimed, procured and seized”, “and bare” which means “and took up with bands, carried, sustained and supported” “our sicknesses” or “our diseases, maladies and infirmities”. Matthew shared how Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah who would “bear” the “infirmities” and “sicknesses” of mankind upon His own body.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how he referred to another Old Testament scripture (Isaiah 53:4) to show how Jesus was the Messiah of God. No one else in history was able to address and heal the “sicknesses, infirmities and demon possessions” of people in the scale that Jesus did, and God intended for every person to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus. All who are wise shall consider all that Jesus did not only to identify with man, but also to “bear” all the “ills” and difficulties they endure.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus, “gave commandment to depart unto the other sidewhen He “saw great multitudes about him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
