Lead Us Not into Temptation Matthew 6:13

Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, After this manner therefore pray you: Our Father which are in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and in chapter six and verse thirteen of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples to pray, “lead us not into temptation” where we read:

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

The verse reads, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: Matthew began with the words, “and lead us” which means “and bring or carry inward Jesus' disciples” “not into temptation” or “not towards trial and proving of man's fidelity, integrity, virtue and constancy ”, “but” which means “moreover and” “deliver us” or “rescue, rush and draw the disciples away” “from evil” which refers to “in separation of labors, annoyances, hardships, harassment, toils, perils, disease, wicked and bad”. Jesus told His disciples to ask God not to “bring and carry” them into “trials”, but rather “rescue” them from “wickedness and perils”.

The verse goes on to say, For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” Matthew continued with the word, “for yours” which means “because, since and on account that the disciples'” “is the kingdom” or “is the royal power, kingship, dominion and rule”, “and the power” which refers to “and the strength, ability and influence”, “and the glory” or “the splendor, brightness, excellence, preeminence, dignity and grace”, “for ever” which means “toward the unbroken age, perpetuity and eternity”. “Amen” or “let it be so, so be it and surely, truly and of a truth”. Jesus told His disciples to declare that God possesses “the kingdom, power and glory” for all of eternity, and Jesus finishes the prayer with the affirmation “so be it” and “let it be so”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus wants His disciples to ask God not to lead them to “trials”, and since “evil” is going to be with them, they are to ask God to “rescue” them from it. Jesus also told them to recognize who “owns or possesses” all things throughout eternity – God. God possesses all the “kingdom, power and glory”, and because He desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, we also may declare “amen”.

Next time Jesus tells His disciples to pray, “forgivenessto others causes God “to forgive you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
