Take No Thought for Your Life Matthew 6:25

Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye be single, your whole body shall be full of light. But if your eye is evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you be darkness, how great is that darkness! No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-five of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “take no thought for your life” where we read:

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

The verse reads, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; Matthew began with the word, “therefore” which means “then, accordingly, consequently and these things being so” “I say” or “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims” “unto you” which refers to “the disciples”, “take no thought” or “do not be anxious or troubled with cares” “for your life” which means “on behalf of the disciples' vital force which animates the body and shows itself in breathing”, “what you shall eat” or “what things are the disciples going to consume or devour”, “or what you shall drink” which means “or what things the disciples were going to imbibe”. Jesus told His disciples not to have any “anxious or worrisome” thoughts about what they will “eat or drink”.

The verse continues, nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?” Matthew added the words, “nor yet for” or “not by any means and not at all on behalf of and pertaining to” “your body” which means “the disciples' living corpses” “what you shall put on” or “what things shall they clothe themselves with”, “Is not the life” which means “is not the vital force which animates the body and shows itself in breathing” “more than meat” or “greater in quantity, superior and more excellent than food and nourishment”, “and the body” which means “and the living corpse” “than raiment” or “than apparel, clothing and garments”. Jesus told His disciples not to worry about their “clothing” upon their “bodies” as He questioned whether they knew their “bodies” were more important than their “clothing”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus desired for His disciples not to “worry” about what they were going to wear. Jesus knew the tendency for people who did not have “clothing” to “be anxious” about their “outerwear”. God wants people to be in a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and as they trust in Him and His ways, He is certain to take care of any “clothing” needs they may have.

Next time Jesus tells His disciples, “behold the fowls of the air, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
