By Words Justified or Condemned - Matthew 12:37

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-seven of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus said, “by your words you shall be justified” or “condemned” where we read:

For by your words you shall be justified, and by you words you shall be condemned.

The verse reads, For by your words you shall be justified, ... Matthew began with the word, “for” which means “because, since and on account that” “by your words or “through and by means of the Pharisees and the multitude's utterances, proclamations and declarations” “you shall be justified” which means “the Pharisees and the multitude will be rendered righteous, evinced, pronounced and as they ought to be”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His listeners they would be “rendered righteous” by the words they speak.

The verse continues, ... and by your words you shall be condemned. Matthew added the words, “and by your words” which means “and through and by means of the Pharisees and the multitude's utterances, proclamations and declarations” “you shall be condemned” or “the Pharisees and the multitude will be judged and pronounced guilty”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His listeners they would also be “pronounced guilty” by the words they speak.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see there are two different fates awaiting those who use their words - “justified” or “condemned”. Jesus told His listeners it was from the “abundance of the heart” that their “mouths speak”, and whatever they say will bring either “righteousness” or “condemnation” upon them. God desires to have a loving relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him, He will not only refine and cleanse their hearts, but will also make what they say have a “righteous” end.

Next time Matthew shares how the Pharisees said, “we would see a sign from you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
