Jesus Sitting by the Seaside - Matthew 13:1

Matthew the apostle wrote about Jesus, While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. Then one said unto him, Behold, your mother and your brethren stand without, desiring to speak with you. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother”, and in chapter thirteen and verse one of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus went, “out of the house, and sat by the sea side” where we read:

The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.

The verse reads, The same day went Jesus out of the house, ... Matthew began with the words, “the same day” which means “within the selfsame interval between sunrise and sunset” “went Jesus” or “departed and left Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “out of the house” which means “from the dwelling place and abode where He was located”. Matthew shared how Jesus departed from the house where He spoke to the crowd.

The verse goes on to say, ... and sat by the sea side. Matthew added the words, “and sat” which means “and was seated” “by the sea side” or “beside and near the sea”. Matthew shared how Jesus was seated by the “sea” after He left the house.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see Jesus on the move again. It is interesting to note that Jesus went to the “sea” or the “seashore” to be seated. He created the very shore upon which He sat, and the waters were spoken into existence through His word. God who made all these things desires to have a relationship with people through His Son Jesus, and as Jesus is seated by the sea, perhaps we imagine Him there waiting for people to come unto Him. When they receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He is willing to bring rest to their souls like the trickling waves of the sea that rise and fall upon the sandy shores.

Next time Matthew shares how, “great multitudes were gathered together unto” Jesus “so that he went into a ship”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
