The Scorched and Withered Shallow Seed - Matthew 13:6

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus, went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:, and in chapter thirteen and verse six of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus said the seeds upon the “stony places” were, “scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away” where we read:

And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

The verse reads, And when the sun was up, they were scorched; Matthew began with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “the sun was up” or “the sun rose and sprung up”, “they were scorched” which means “the seeds cast upon the rocky ground were burned and tortured with intense heat”. Matthew wrote how Jesus told the multitude the seeds cast upon the “rocky surfaces” were “burned up” with the intense heat of the sunrise.

The verse continues, and because they had no root, they withered away. Matthew continued with the words, “and because” which means “and since or on account that” “they had no root” or “the seeds cast upon the rocky ground did not have spouts which grew deep”, “they withered away” which means “the seeds cast down upon the rocky surfaces became dried up, wasted and pined away”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the seeds cast upon rocky surfaces which had no depth for their roots were “scorched”, to dried up and wasted away .

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how important it was for “seeds” to have deep roots. Because of the hard surfaces of the rock, though these seeds sprung up quickly, when the “heat from the sun” came, they “dried up and wasted away”. God desires a deep, loving relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and His desire is that they might not be “blown away” from the “scorching affects” of the world. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Him, grow in their relationship with Him and ask Him to insure they are planted in good soil so as to have “deep roots”.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told the people some seed, “fell among thorns”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
