Jesus' Disciples Faulted - Matthew 12:1

Matthew the apostle shared how Jesus said, “Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light”, and in chapter twelve and verse one of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus', “disciples were hungry, and began to pluck the ears of corn” where we read:

At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn;

and his disciples were hungry, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.

The verse reads, At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn;” Matthew began with the words, “at that time” which means “in due measure and at an opportune and seasonable time” “Jesus” which means “Jehovah is Salvation” and is “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “went on the sabbath day” or “departed, traveled and traversed on the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work” “through the corn” which means “through sown fields of growing crops”. Matthew shared how Jesus walked through “corn” or “wheat” fields on a “Sabbath day”.

The verse continues and his disciples were hungry, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.” Matthew added the words, “and his disciples” which means “and Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “were hungry” or “were craving ardently and seeking with eager desire for food”, “and began” or “commenced and made a beginning” “to pluck” which means “to pull off” “the ears of corn” or “the head of the grain as standing out from the stalk”, “and to eat” which means “and to consume and devour the corn”. Matthew shared how Jesus' “disciples” desired something to eat, and they began to “pull off” the grains of wheat and and “eat” them.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see the natural physical desires of Jesus and His disciples. They were hungry, and as they walked through the “wheat field”, more than likely they began to pull the heads of “corn” or “wheat” from the stalks, rubbed them in their hands, separated the kernels and chewed them like a gum. This was a common practice among those who lived in Israel, and because they were hungry, they began to eat. God loves people and He desires to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus. His earth is filled with nourishing elements to fill hungry bodies, and His Son Jesus fulfills the spiritually hungry soul.

Next time Matthew shares how the Pharisees say that Jesus', “disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
