Judged for Every Idle Word - Matthew 12:36

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathers not with me scatters abroad. Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaks against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.” Jesus added, “Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-six of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus said, “every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof” where we read:

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak,

they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

The verse reads, But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, ... Matthew began with the word, “but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “I say” or “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims” “unto you” which means “to the Pharisees and the multitude around Him”, “that every idle word” which means “that each, all, the whole and everyone of the free from labor, leisure, lazy and shunning the labor which one ought to perform utterances, speeches, declarations and proclamations” “that men” or “that people whether male or female” “shall speak” which means “will utter, declare or proclaim”. Matthew shared how Jesus referred to “each and every” “utterance” of people as He declared His next word of warning to the Pharisees and the crowd.

The verse goes on to say, ... they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. Matthew added the words, “they shall give account thereof” which means “the people who speak will deliver, produce, give back and restore” “in the day” or “at the last day of this present age, the day Christ will return from heaven, raise the dead, hold the final judgment and perfect his kingdom” “of judgment” which means “belonging to decision, justice, condemnation and punishment”. Matthew shared how Jesus told the Pharisees and the people surrounding Him there would be a “time” of reckoning for every single word they spoke.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see the importance of words that are spoken. Since “good” or “evil” things come from the “heart and mind” of people, there must be a change within to speak “good” and not “evil”. God purposed to send His Son Jesus to the world so people might know Him and have their “words” altered according to His speech. Judgment will not be as harsh for the “words” of those who have a relationship with Jesus Christ, but woe be to those who do not know Him and shall have “every idle word” judged by the Creator of the Universe.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus declares, “by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
