When the Unclean Spirit is Gone - Matthew 12:43

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-two of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told the people what happens, “when the unclean spirit is gone out of a man” where we read:

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man,

he walks through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none.

The verse reads, When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, ... Matthew began with the word, “when” which means “at the time and moment” “the unclean spirit” or “the impure and lewd in thought and life demons, evil spirits who were conceived as inhabiting the bodies of men” “is gone out of ” which means “has departed, emitted and proceeded from” “a man” or “a person whether male or female”. Matthew shared how Jesus spoke of the time when a “demon or evil spirit” has departed from a person.

The verse continues, he walks through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Matthew continued with the words, “he walks” which means “the demon or evil spirit passes, journeys and goes abroad” “through dry places” or “by way and means of waterless cities, villages and districts”, “seeking rest” which means “looking, aiming and striving for intermission, cessation of any motion, business or labor; recreation”, “and finds none” or “and does not chance upon, see, discover or understand any rest at all”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the “departed evil spirit” “journeys” about attempting to discover “cessation from all business and labor” but discovers “none”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how “demons” which are “cast out” of people become restless and desire to find some sort of “recreation” from troubles. God allows this to be, and although Jesus has much more to say about this in the next verse, let those who read these words understand this, “Evil spirits and demons” are real, and though they are “cast out”, they do not become inactive. They seek other “resting places”, and those who are wise shall align themselves with God who loves them and has made provision for a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus. Those who are wise shall yield their lives to Him and allow Him to keep them protected from “evil spirits” who attempt to find “rest” within them.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus shares how the “unclean spirit” says, “i will return into my house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
