Mark wrote how Jesus, “in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for you. And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils”, and in chapter one and verse forty of his book, Mark wrote how, “there came a leper to” Jesus where we read:
And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him,
and saying unto him, If you will, you can make me clean.
The verse reads, “And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, ...” Mark began with the words, “and there came a leper” which means “and a leprous man with scaly and rough skin arose, appeared and approached” “to him” or “to Jesus”, “beseeching him” which means “summoning, entreating, exhorting and begging Jesus”, “and kneeling down to him” or “and prostrating themselves while falling on his knees in reverence and honor to Jesus”. Mark shared how a man with “leprosy” begged Jesus as he fell on his knees in reverence to Him.
The verse continues, “... and saying unto him, If you will, you can make me clean. ” Mark added the words, “and saying unto him” which means “and uttering, declaring and proclaiming to Jesus”, “If you will” or “except and whether Jesus has in mind, intends, determines and purposes”, “you can make me clean” which means “Jesus is able to purify, cleanse, purge and make him free from defilement of leprosy”. Mark shared how the “leprous man” declared to Jesus if He “desired”, He could make the “leper himself” completely “cleansed” and free from the defilement of his disease.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how this “leprous man” believed Jesus would help Him. He acted upon his belief, and bowed before Jesus as he pled for healing from his “leprosy”. “Leprosy” in the Bible is a type of “sin”, and every person is inflicted with the disease of “sin”. The “leprous man” believed Jesus was able to “make him clean”, and even as Jesus is able to help physical diseases like “leprosy”, He is able to deliver people from the “spiritual disease” of “sin”. Jesus came to die for the “sins” of mankind, and when He gave His life on the cross, He paid the price for the “spiritual leprosy” of everyone. Those who are wise will bow before Him, believe Him and ask Jesus to make them “free from defilement of sin, faults and wickedness”.
Next time Mark shares how, “Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him” Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
