Mark wrote how, “And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them. And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, your sins be forgiven you. But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts. Why does this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?”, and in chapter two and verse eight of his book, Mark shares how Jesus asked, “why reason you these things in your hearts?” where we read:
And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves,
he said unto them, Why reason you these things in your hearts?
The verse reads, “And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, ...” Mark began with the words, “and immediately” which means “and straightaway and forthwith” “when Jesus perceived in his spirit” or “at the time and moment the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation recognized, was acquainted with and knew thoroughly within His disposition and influence which fills and governs the soul” “that they so reasoned within themselves” which means “that the scribes reckoned, resolved and deliberated among their own selves”. Mark shared how Jesus “recognized” that how the “scribes” were “deliberating” within themselves concerning Him.
The verse goes on to say, “he said unto them, Why reason you these things in your hearts?” Mark continued with the words, “he said unto them” which means “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to the scribes”, “why reason you these things” or “for what purpose and cause do the scribes consider, dispute, muse and discuss what Jesus said” “in your hearts” which refers to “within their souls or minds as they are the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”? Mark shared how Jesus asked the “scribes” why they were “deliberating” within their own “souls” concerning what He said to the “man sick with the palsy”.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see Jesus' perception and response to the “scribes” questioning Him. Because He knows everything, none of the “scribes” words and questions within themselves were a surprise to Him, and He knew what to ask them. Jesus is able to overcome all “questions” concerning Him, and because these were “prideful” and “intellectual” “religious leaders”, they questioned Him. God desires people to come “humbly” before His Son Jesus and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and those who pridefully question Him may find themselves an impediment to their own path to the true and living God.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus asks the scribes, “Which is easier to say? Your sins be forgiven you; or … Arise, and take up your bed?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
