Mark wrote as Jesus and his disciples, “were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her. And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them. And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils. And all the city was gathered together at the door”, and in chapter one and verse thirty-four of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus, “healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils” where we read:
And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils;
and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.
The verse reads, “And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils;” Mark began with the words, “and he healed many” which means “and Jesus cured and restored to health a large, great and multitude of people” “that were sick”or “who were miserable ill and grieved” “of divers diseases” which means “of different and various sicknesses and infirmities”, “and cast out” or “and expelled, compelled to depart” “many devils” which refers to “a large number, much and a lot of demons and evil spirits”. Mark shared how Jesus “cured” many people who were “afflicted with various sicknesses”, and He made “evil spirits” or “demons” depart from those who were “possessed”.
The verse goes on to say, “and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.” Mark continued with the words, “and suffered not” which means “and did not allow or yield to, hindered and did not permit” “the devils” which means “the evil spirits or demons” “to speak” or “to utter, declare or proclaim anything”, “because” which means “since and on account that” “they knew him” or “the evil spirits and demons perceived, noticed, discerned, discovered and had knowledge of Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus did not allow the “evil spirits” to say anything because the “demons” identified Him.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus once again demonstrated His power over “sickness, disease and demons”. Nothing and no one was more powerful than Jesus, and because the people in Caperanaum needed His help, He ministered to them. God knows the needs within people, and their greatest need is for a “Savior”. Without Jesus, no one can be saved, and because His desire is to reach every person, He will minister to them in whatever condition they are, meet their need and become their “Savior and Lord” when they submit their lives to Him.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
