Matthew the apostle wrote how an angel said to the women who came to visit Jesus' grave, “Fear not: for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there shall you see him: lo, I have told you. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshiped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and showed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers. Saying, Say you, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day”, and in chapter twenty-eight and verse sixteen of his book, Matthew wrote how, “ the eleven disciples went away into Galilee” where we read:
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
The verse reads, “Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, ...” Matthew began words, “then the eleven disciples” which means “at that time the eleven students, pupils and attendants of Jesus” “went away into Galilee” or “left and departed to the region of northern Palestine, bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel, on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan which means circuit”. Matthew shared how Jesus' “disciples” departed to “Galilee” as instructed by the “women” who met the angel and Jesus.
The verse continues, “... into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.” Matthew added the words, “into a mountain” or “to the rising above the plain” “where Jesus” which means “where Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “had appointed them” or “arranged, assigned and ordained the disciples”. Matthew shared how Jesus' “disciples” went to the “mountain” in Galilee where Jesus instructed them to meet Him.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we note the obedience of Jesus' disciples to “go” to “mountain in Galilee” where He would meet them. As simple as this may seem, it is an important part of Jesus continuing to “save” people from their sins. We note there are “eleven” disciples now because Judas hung himself, and when the “disciples” went to the “mountain in Galilee” to meet Jesus, they were to be commissioned to carry on the message of Jesus' resurrection. Because the disciples obeyed Jesus, everyone can receive “everlasting life” by believing and trusting in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Matthew shares when the “eleven disciples”, “saw him, they worshipped him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
