Matthew the apostle recorded Jesus' words, “Go you therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen”, and as we commence our study of the gospel of Mark, we begin Jesus' story again where we read:
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
The verse reads, “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, ...” Mark began words, “the beginning” which means “the origin, commencement and start” “of the gospel” or “pertaining to the good tidings and news of the kingdom of God soon to be set up” “of Jesus Christ” or “belonging to Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate the anointed One and the Messiah”. Mark began to share “the beginning” of “Jesus Christ's” good news.
The verse continues, “... the Son of God;” Mark added the words, “the Son of God” which refers to “God's Son who is Jesus the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”. Mark shared how Jesus is “God's Son”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we are introduced to the “beginning” of Mark's version of the “good news” of Jesus Christ. As the book of Matthew was written by a Jew, to the Jews about a Jew, the book of Mark was written with the “Romans” or “Gentiles” in mind. Many of the Jewish traditions are omitted by Mark, and others times Mark explains Jewish traditions so His readers understand them. As we study through this more abbreviated version of the “gospel of Jesus”, let us keep in mind God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and whether they are Jew or Gentile, God wants His Son Jesus to be their “Savior and Lord”.
Next time we see Mark quote from the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, which shall prepare thy way before you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
