Matthew the apostle wrote how an angel said to the women who came to visit Jesus' grave, “Fear not: for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there shall you see him: lo, I have told you. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshiped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me”, and in chapter twenty-eight and verse eleven of his book, Matthew wrote how, “some of the watch came into the city, and showed unto the chief priest all the things” where we read:
Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city,
and showed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.
The verse reads, “Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, ...” Matthew began words, “now when” which means “at the time and moment” “they were going” or “the women left and departed”, “behold” which means “lo and see”, “some of the watch” which refers to “certain ones within the Roman guard who were watching Jesus' tomb” “came into the city” or “arose, entered and appeared in the city of Jerusalem”. Matthew shared how the Roman guards who were assigned to keep secure the grave of Jesus entered Jerusalem at the same time the “women” were going to tell Jesus' disciples He had “risen” from the grave.
The verse continues, “... and showed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.” Matthew added the words, “and showed unto the chief priests” or “and brought tidings, report, words and proclamations unto the high priests concerning” “all the things that were done” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the events that happened, came to pass and appeared in history”. Matthew shared how the “Roman guard” told the “high priests” about everything that happened surrounding Jesus' resurrection.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we can imagine the bewilderment of these “Roman guards” as they went to “report” what happened at Jesus' tomb. The bright light, the earthquake and passing out were all told to the “chief priests”, and when we consider the escape of Jesus would mean certain death for them, they must have been extremely anxious and fearful. God knew all these things would come to pass because He was determined to give a path of “salvation” to mankind so they could have a relationship with Him. “Sin” separated people from God, and Jesus died for those sins, rose again and affected even those who were guarding Him. Those who are wise will carefully consider all these events and realize, Jesus is the Messiah sent from God, and “everlasting life” with God the Father is only provided through Him.
Next time Matthew shares how the chief priests, “gave large money unto the soldiers”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
