After Jesus was crucified and placed within a tomb, Matthew the apostle wrote, “the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse sixty-three of his book, Matthew shared how the chief priests and Pharisees said to Pilate, “Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, … After three days I will rise again” where we read:
Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said,
while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
The verse reads, “Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, ...” Matthew began word, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Sir” or “master and Lord” “we remember” or “the high priests and Pharisees recall, are mindful of and are reminded” “that that deceiver” which means “because and since Jesus' whom they said was a misleading imposter, corrupter and deceiver” “said” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following. Matthew shared how the “religious leaders” told Pilate they “recalled” how Jesus whom deemed was an imposter made the following statement.
The verse goes on to say, “... while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.” Matthew added the words, “while he was yet alive” or “at the time Jesus was still living”, “after three days” which means “when three days have passed” “I will rise again” or “Jesus will raise, arouse from sleep and be recalled from the dead to life”. Matthew shared how the “religious leaders” told Pilate that Jesus declared He would “rise” from the dead “three days” after His death.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how these “chief priests and Pharisees” heard Jesus' words with their ears and minds, however, their “hearts” were far from Him. Some people “hear and repeat” what Jesus says but have no relationship with Him at all, and when these “religious leaders” repeated Jesus' words, they were in doubt of Him. God wants a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him, they not only will have “heard” Him, but will also have obeyed Him as well.
Next time Matthew shares how the chief priests and Pharisees say to Pilate, “Command therefore that the sepulcher be made sure”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
