Come After Me - Mark 1:17

Mark wrote how Jesus, “was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him. Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent, and believe the gospel. Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers”, and in chapter one and verse seventeen of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus told Simon and Andrew, “come after me” where we read:

And Jesus said unto them, Come after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

The verse reads, “And Jesus said unto them, Come after me, ... Mark began words, “and Jesus” which refers to “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “said unto them” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed unto Simon and Andrew”, “Come after me” or “follow behind Jesus Himself”. Mark shared how Jesus instructed “Simon and Andrew” to “follow Him”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and I will make you to become fishers of men.” Mark continued with the words, “and I will make you” which means “and Jesus would prepare, bear and constitute Simon and Andrew” “to become” which means “to come into being, be found and happen as” “fishers of men” or “fishermen of human beings whether male or female”. Mark shared how Jesus told “Simon and Andrew” He would “constitute” them as “fishermen” of people.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see Jesus choosing “Simon and Andrew” as His followers or “disciples” and promising to equip them to be “fishers of men”. Jesus “chose” them, and He promised to “equip” them to carry on a similar labor to their “earthy” work. God “calls” every person to be His “disciple”, and when they yield their lives to His Son Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”, He not only will “save” them, but will also give them everlasting life and use them in His Kingdom according to His purposes and plan.

Next time Mark tells how Simon and Andrew, “forsook their nets, and followed him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
