Scribes Reasoning in Their Hearts - Mark 2:6

Mark wrote how Jesus, “again ... entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them. And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, your sins be forgiven you”, and in chapter two and verse six of his book, Mark shares how, there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their heartswhere we read:

But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,

The verse reads, “But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, ... Mark began with the words, “but” which means “nonetheless, nevertheless, moreover and” “there were certain of the scribes” or “in that place there were particular of men learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings and were interpreters and teachers”, “sitting there” or “seated within the house where Jesus spoke to the paralytic man”. Mark shared how religious leaders who were known as “scribes” were seated within the house where Jesus was.

The verse continues, “... and reasoning in their hearts,” Mark added the words, “and reasoning” which means “and reckoning, resolving and deliberating” “in their hearts” or “within their souls or minds as they are the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”. Mark shared how the “religious leaders” known as “scribes” began to “deliberate” within their own selves.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how there were “religious leaders” within this house where Jesus spoke to the “paralytic man”. As usual, they were there to “observe” all things which were said and done, and when they heard Jesus say to the “man sick of the palsy”, “Son, your sons be forgiven you”, they began to talk to themselves. God wants people to observe Jesus' life and yield their lives to Him when they discover He is the “Messiah” sent from God, and yet, some people only “reason in their hearts” or “talk to themselves” about Him and miss the opportunity to know Him as the “Savior and Lord” of mankind.

Next time Mark shares how the “scribes” ask, why does this man thus speak blasphemies?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
