Jesus Rebuking the Unclean Spirit - Mark 1:25

Mark wrote how Jesus, “on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out. Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with you, you Jesus of Nazareth? are you come to destroy us? I know you who thou are, the Holy One of God”, and in chapter one and verse twenty-five of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus “rebuked” the “unclean spirit” where we read:

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold your peace, and come out of him.

The verse reads, “And Jesus rebuked him, saying, ... Mark began words, “and Jesus” which refers to “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “rebuked him” which means “adjudged, chided, reproved and censured severely the man with the unclean spirit”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following. Mark shared how Jesus “chided and censured severely” the “unclean spirit” within the man.

The verse goes on to say, Hold your peace, and come out of him.” Mark continued with the words, “hold your peace” which means “be muzzled, close your mouth and be made speechless and reduced to silence”, “and come out” or “and go forth, escape and emit” “of him” which means “from the man”. Mark shared how Jesus commanded the “unclean spirit” to “shut up” and depart from the man.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus demonstrated His power over the “unclean spirit”. Not only did He “quiet” them, He commanded that they depart from the man. Jesus has power over “evil spirits”, and those “spirits” attempt to keep people from having a personal relationship with God. This is why Jesus came. He recognizes the “evil spirits” that influence and live within people, and those “wicked spirits” keep them from coming to Him. He defeated all “unclean spirits” by dying on the cross and making a way through which people may humbly come to Him, ask forgiveness for their sins and inherit “everlasting life” with God.

Next time Mark tells how the “unclean spirit”, “came out of him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
